Clinical specialist routes

Become the person other clinicians ask for advice.

Specialist Nurse
Deep expertise in one field — diabetes, tissue viability, infection control, respiratory, continence and dozens more. Usually built through short courses plus experience, not a full retrain.
Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP)
Assess, diagnose, treat and often prescribe independently. A recognised postgraduate route (usually MSc-level) open to experienced RNs.
Nurse Consultant
The top clinical grade — expert practice, leadership, education and research combined. The most senior route that keeps you hands-on with patients.
Research Nurse
Deliver and help design clinical trials and studies — a genuinely different day-to-day, still rooted in clinical skill.
